Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Any student in grade 7-12 can design, conduct, and report on an area of STEM interest.

Each year a number of students from Fairview School District participate in the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) competition. To participate any students in grade 7-12 can design, conduct and report on an area of STEM interest by using research and preparation for an independent experimental investigation. Many are guided through the project within the curriculum of an honors science course. Some conduct the task even more independently while guided by a science department staff member. They must design, conduct and present the results of their research. The presentation is judged against a rubric by professionals and college professors in the field of the study. Upon completion the students then receive awards of first through third place. If a first place award is achieved the student then has the opportunity to present at the state competition held at Penn State Main Campus in May. This has been a very motivational experience for the participants. Many come away with confidence and knowledge beyond what the classroom provides.
