The middle level is the age of exploration. Fairview Middle School affords educational opportunities and explorations that range from world drumming to robotics. The building features a 580 seat auditorium/theater, band/chorus practice and rehearsal rooms, an arts suite, industrial technology suite, full size gymnasium, an automated media center, and high-tech lab.
FMS offers students the opportunity to compete in Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science competition, Challenge 24, Accelerated Reader, PA Mathematics League and National Geographic Geography Bee competitions.
The FMS curriculum enhances and enriches its curriculum in all areas to better address the needs of all students. Some of the enhancements offered include: art and music presentations, grade level field trips, competitions in the language arts and math curriculums, and cross-curriculum collaboration of classroom projects. This is just a sampling of the many ways FMS endeavors to enrich its students.
High expectations are reflected throughout the academic program.
The math department seamlessly transitions students from basic math concepts through Algebra I for honors students by the end of their middle school years.
The reading/language arts curriculum provides students with the necessary note-taking, studying, reading, and research skills to prepare them for their high school years. The students hone these new skills as they produce creative reports, multimedia presentations, research papers, news articles, newsletters, and books.
Social studies directly introduces students to the United States. An in-depth exploration of American history, our neighbors and their cultures, and American citizenship are all part of this curriculum.
The science department has expanded into the campus with the Larry D. Kessler Tiger Trail, a community outdoor learning trail.
The industrial technology department includes robotics, drafting, metal, and woodworking labs. The large family consumer science suite is structured to facilitate kitchen, dining, and sewing applications.
The music and art departments expose our students to a variety of media, theory, and application for the fine arts. Each curriculum is enhanced with computers, multi-media systems, instruments, books, and equipment to facilitate a full range of lifelong appreciation.
Student activities serve as a major component of the middle school philosophy. These activities provide the students with an opportunity to utilize their co-curricular skills and interests. FMS activities include: Student Council, Chorus, field trips, Drama, Yearbook, newspaper, dances, sports, and many after-school activities.
Exploration and recreational offerings are conducted after school in the fall, winter and spring seasons. These programs vary from season to season and provide the student with the opportunity to explore different sports, learning and recreational experiences. Clay, Robotics, Bowling, Paintball, Baseball, Golf, Fencing are but some of the many opportunities available to our students.
There are a number of community and parent-based programs which provide enrichment and enhancement to the overall program. The Adopt-an-Artist group fills the school with student art, provides a number of artist and musical presentations, and supports student trips to art museums, performances, and special locations. The PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) is involved and supportive in providing ideas and assist both financially and logistically. Positive parental involvement is key to Fairview Middle School's programming.
