The JETS TEAMS program is an annual high school competition challenging students to work collaboratively and apply their math and science knowledge in practical, creative ways to solve real everyday engineering challenges. After participating in TEAMS, students increase their knowledge of engineering, feel more confident about participating in engineering activities and increase their ability to work with others to solve complex problems. The TEAMS Competition helps develop “STEM-capable” ( Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) students in an engaging way by showing them how math and science, with an engineering focus, are used to make tangible differences in the world. On March 2nd two Fairview High School teams participated in the regional JETS TEAMS competition. JETS (Junior Engineering Technical Society) is a national nonprofit education organization that promotes interest in engineering, science, mathematics, and technology. JETS, which has served pre-college engineering community since 1950, is dedicated to providing real-world engineering and problem solving experience while in high school students. JETS programs challenge students to discover engineering while in high school. JETS puts students in touch with engineers, shows them what engineers do, and demonstrates how the math and science concepts students are learning in class are applied in real life to engineering problems. JETS programs get students involved with engineering and with preparing for reaching for the future. JETS competitions and programs are held on 150 college campuses each year, reaching more than 30,000 students and 2000 teachers. In the TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science) eight students work together on engineering problems. Competition problems cover mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, visual interpretation of information, computer applications, and reading analysis and interpretation. The theme this year is “Smarter Energy. Cleaner Planet”. The second portion of their examinations, which are comprised of more open ended scenarios, have been forwarded for evaluation at the state and national level. Results will be announced in April. Fairview traditionally has done well at Regionals and frequently placed well at States. On at least two occasions our teams have placed first in the Nation in their division.
