General
Information
The middle level is
the age of exploration. Fairview Middle School affords
educational opportunities and explorations that range from hammer
and nails to the Internet. The recent renovation of FMS has
facilitated its transition from a traditional junior high approach
into a true middle school concept, both physically and
philosophically. The building features a 580 seat
auditorium/theater, band/chorus practice and rehearsal rooms, an
arts suite, industrial technology suite, full size gymnasium,
automated media center, and high-tech lab.
Advanced
Placement
FMS offers
advanced placement in Foreign Language and Algebra. FMS also offers acceleration in
both mathematics and reading for high achieving
students.
Academic
Competitions
FMS offers
students the opportunity to compete in Pennsylvania Junior Academy
of Science competition, Science Fair, Challenge 24, Accelerated
Reader, PA Mathematics League, and Times News
Spelling Bee competitions.

Enrichment
The FMS curriculum enhances and enriches its
curriculum in all areas to better address the needs of all
students. Some of the enhancements offered include: art and
music presentations, grade level field trips, competitions in the
language arts and math curriculums, cross-curriculum collaboration
of classroom projects, and the Science Fair. This is just a
sampling of the many ways FMS endeavors to enrich its
students.
Special Education
Programs
A student identified
as exceptional is assigned a curriculum designed to meet the
individual's educational needs as outlined in the student's
"Individualized Educational Program." Special
Education programs in Fairview Middle School are recognized as:
Gifted, Learning Support, Speech and Hearing.
Curriculum
High expectations are reflected throughout the
academic program.
The math department seamlessly transitions
students from basic math concepts through Algebra I by the end of
grade eight. There is an opportunity for the advanced students
to complete Algebra II by the end of their middle school years.
The reading/language arts curriculum
provides students with the necessary note-taking, studying, reading,
and research skills to prepare them for their high school years.
The students hone these new skills as they produce creative
reports, multimedia presentations, research papers, news articles,
newsletters, and books.
Social studies directly introduces students
to the United States. An in-depth exploration of American
history, our neighbors and their cultures, and American citizenship
are all part of this curriculum.
The science department is located in the
north wing of the building and this year will expand into the
science courtyard with the construction of a large greenhouse.
Foreign language is offered at each grade
level. In grade 5, students are given exposure to French and
Spanish. A Latin based "Phenomenon of Language" is
offered in grade 6. In grades 7 & 8, students have a
choice of a semester of either French or Spanish. This
instruction qualifies the students to enter high school with one
year of language already completed.
The Industrial Technology department
includes robotics, drafting,
metal, and woodworking labs. The large home economics suite is
structured to facilitate kitchen, dining, and sewing
applications.
There are four computer labs located in various sections of the building;
the library, tech lab, 5th grade commons and 6th grade commons. They
are used for research, presentation skills, "word" keyboarding and
report processing.
The music and art departments expose our
students to a variety of media, theory, and application for the fine
arts. Each curriculum is enhanced with computers, multi-media
systems, instruments, books, and equipment to facilitate a full
range of life-long appreciation.
Extracurricular Activities
The athletic program offers opportunities to all
students. Four interscholastic sports are currently offered at
FMS: basketball, football, wrestling, and soccer.
Intramural athletic offerings include bowling, cross country, and swimming.
Student activities serve as a major
component of the middle school philosophy. These activities
provide the students with an opportunity to employ their
co-curricular skills and interests. FMS activities
include: Student Council, Chorus, field trips, Drama, Yearbook,
newspaper, dances, sports, and many after-school activities.
Exploration and recreational offerings are conducted after school in the
fall, winter and spring seasons. These 8-week programs vary from
season to season and provide the student with the opportunity to explore
different sports, learning and recreational experiences. Clay, Theater
Study, Bowling, Jazz Band, Stage, Golf, Intramural Basketball are but some
of the many opportunities available to our students.
There are a number of community and
parent-based programs which provide enrichment and enhancement to
the overall program. The Adopt-an-Artist group fills the
school with hundreds of samples of art, provides a number of artist
and musical presentations, and supports student trips to art
museums, performances, and special locations. The PSA (Parent
School Association) is very involved and supportive in providing
ideas and support both financially and logistically. Positive
parental involvement is the key to Fairview Middle School's first class
program.
Accelerated Reader
Many
people question why we promote the Accelerated Reader so much.
The answer is quite simple. Students who read more, read
better. The Accelerated Reader encourages more reading which
in turn produces better readers. Better readers make better
students.
