A group of FHS juniors took part in the 12th Annual Rotary Club Ethics Symposium held at Mercyhurst University on May 17. The event’s focus was to teach participants, from schools throughout Erie City and Erie County, how to use ethics when decision making through lectures, activities, and scenarios.

Six high school student attended the PJAS State Meet. Three earned 1st Award and three earned 2nd Awards for their 2023 presentations of their independent research. Aditya Turaga has been offered a scholarship to Penn State in the College of Engineering via his participation in the Pennsylvania Science Talent Search selection process. Aditya was also recognized for five years of perseverance in the PJAS competitions. Amani Thomas has similar offers through the same process for both the Eberly School of Science and the College of Agricultural Sciences. Autumn Liccardi was presented a plaque as a senior with five years of perseverance. Ulyana Hoja achieved a perfect score from the judges. Snigdha Garuda is a first time presenter and has had valuable growing experience via her PJAS involvement. Anish Pabbati and Kashyup Alluri are in their third year of participating and will likely follow the lead of these upper classmen over the next three years. Jocelyn Tatarko qualified for the State Meet, but was unable to attend. We look forward to her joining us again next year.

The Erie Experience classes took a true tour of Erie this past week. The trip started at Smith’s Provision, a locally owned, family business, with a tour by Emily Weber. Emily is the Purchasing Director at Smith’s and operates the business with her uncle (3rd generation) and 3 sisters (4th generation). The class had lunch at Fairview-owned and operated, Donatos on West 8th Street, followed by another local favorite for dessert, Romolos. The afternoon concluded with a scavenger hunt at Frontier Park. Learning and a fun were had by all!

Mr. Masterson’s AP Statistics class was putting their data analysis and hypothesis testing skills to the test on a recent day out on the football field. They collected data comparing the distance that different types of baseballs travel. Data was collected by measuring distance travelled in yards and was taken back to the classroom where graphs were made and population distance estimates were created and interpreted.

Another amazing experience with a guest speaker for AP Spanish & Culture as we head into exam weeks. Gracias a Jan Stillfried, who spoke to us straight from Santiago, Chile about cultural topics of all sorts, as usual almost all in Spanish. So proud of my students to be able to manage such complex conversations in the language! This is my favorite type of lesson - when I also get to learn so much.

Here are some rehearsal shots of one of our two spring plays, “One Stoplight Town”, a play about a small town, not unlike Fairview, that sees new developments and puts a stoplight in the middle of town. Some think the traffic light is unnecessary as “nothing new happens in this town”, but we soon see lots of things happen if we have the eye to look for them. Come support our students in the FHS auditorium at 7:00 on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday. Tickets are $3.
