In 5th grade ELA, we are just wrapping up our Unit 2 with background information about ancient civilizations. Students are learning how to paraphrase information from the text and then put it into their own words. They are creating their own Codex project which will be made up of paragraphs, pictures and captions of their chosen topic about each ancient empire. They enjoyed collaborating and applying these skills to produce this project.

Miss McMullen's class read about ancient civilizations and identified characteristics of what makes a civilization. They placed the civilizations on a timeline to practice identifying events that happened "before common era" and during "common era." Throughout the unit, students will read and write about ancient civilizations, their characteristics, and their time periods, comparing and contrasting along the way. This activity built background knowledge for future lessons as they saw ways these civilizations were similar and different.
