It is with pleasure that we announce Hlib Ostroverkhov, an exceptional eighth-grade student at Fairview Middle School, has been honored with the McDonald's Ray Kroc Youth Achievement Award. This prestigious award, named after the visionary founder of McDonald's, recognizes students who embody a well-rounded character, demonstrating excellence across various facets of their lives. When Hlib first arrived at Fairview in the sixth grade, he spoke no English. His ability to not only adapt but to thrive and now be recognized with such an accolade is a testament to his incredible resilience, hard work, and dedication to his studies and personal growth. The McDonald's Ray Kroc Youth Achievement Award specifically looks for students who have earned the respect of both peers and teachers, excelling in areas such as persistence, determination, hard work, and excellence in areas like citizenship, leadership scholarship, and sportsmanship—not necessarily as the top student in each category, but for their combined positive impact. The entire Fairview Middle School community extends its congratulations to Hlib for this accomplishment. Such accolades not only celebrate individual excellence but also serve as an inspiring testament to the academic environment fostered within our school. This achievement reflects positively on Hlib's commitment to his studies and personal growth, as well as the unwavering support provided by his teachers, mentors, and family. It is a moment of pride for Fairview, highlighting the bright future that lies ahead for our students.

Last week, 8th graders in art class welcomed guest artists Janet Zegarelli and her son Hogan Zegarelli. They practice the traditional Ukrainian egg decorating art or Pysanky. With the Zegarellis' guidance, students used their kistka tools to apply beeswax, masking color before dipping their eggs in the next dye. The 8th graders achieved some excellent results.

5th graders in Mrs. Yates' math class have been so busy the past few weeks with their Measurement and Geometry chapters. First, to close out the Measurement chapter, students created their own houses based upon specific Customary and Metric measurements. There were some outstanding houses and it was so hard to choose the winners! To kick off the Geometry chapter, students created Quadrilateral Trading Cards to become familiar with all of the attributes of each quadrilateral. As we began studying three-dimensional shapes, students created them with playdough and toothpicks to find faces, edges, and vertices. Finally, to close out the Geometry chapter, students used volume snap cubes to create their initial, find the volume, and then combine with other students to find composite volume. Safe to say they have earned a restful Spring Break!
