This year, with the help of the Fairview School Foundation, students at FMS had the opportunity to join MathCounts! MathCounts is a national middle school mathematics competition that builds problem-solving skills and fosters achievement through four levels of fun, in-person “bee” style contests. This year's competition took place at Gannon University for students who qualified in 6th-8th grade this past weekend. Great job to Grace Liu (7th), Lennon Cook (8th), Aaditya Girish (7th), James Lin (8th), Chloe Smith (8th), Noah Estrich (7th), Shri Veeranki (7th), and Shoaib Essa (8th) who represented FMS at the competition! Fairview took home 3rd place for the team round, consisting of Grace Liu, Lennon Cook, Aaditya Girish, and James Lin. Lennon Cook took 4th place and Grace Liu took 5th place individually, qualifying them for the State Competition in Harrisburg next month! We also held a school competition for 5th grade students, and are happy to congratulate our winners Jeffrey Lin, Cadan Robertson, Giovanni Imbrogno, Tanishq Sharma, and Nicholas Bloom! We are so proud of all our mathletes that took an interest in this program!
FMS 6th grade class trip to Kalahari.
Several of the ROAR Club members at FMS participated in a community service activity. Students volunteered at Orphan Angels Cat Sanctuary, helping with many cleaning tasks and showering the cats with love and affection.
The FMS Robotics teams, the Fairview Tigers and Cyber Tiger Techs, competed at the First Lego League regional competition at Penn State Behrend on Saturday, February 10th. The teams presented their projects, core values, and robot missions that they have been working on for the past 5 months. Out of 26 total teams, the Fairview Tigers took home 1st place for Core Values and the Cyber Tiger Techs took home 2nd place for Core Values. Congratulations to both teams for a successful season! Go Tigers!
Some students in Mrs. Hedstrom's math class used sweet treats to practice their identification and classification of lines and angles. Students used Twizzlers and Skittles to create lines, line segments, rays, angles, and some 2-D shapes with specific lines. Students enjoyed the hands-on learning, and of course the yummy treat at the end!
Kids from 14 local schools took over the Erie Insurance Arena on Thursday, February 1. Students cheered on the Erie Otters during the annual School Day Game.
But before the puck dropped, some kids were out on the ice, singing not one, but two, National Anthems. These singers are part of the Fairview Middle School Chorus, kicked off Thursday's match-up by singing the Canadian National Anthem and the Star Spangled Banner , all in front of a crowd of hundreds of school-age hockey fans.
Using the information of Vertical, Supplementary and Complementary Angles along with the rules for straight angles and triangles, students shared thoughts on identifying the measurements of several missing angles within various diagrams.
Ten students represented Fairview Middle School at the PJAS Region 10 Meet on January 27 at Penn State Behrend. As part of PJAS (Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science), these students presented their research findings to a panel of judges. Students who were awarded First Place Awards are eligible to present at the State Meet held at Penn State University in May.
The FMS Robotics Team hosted a booth at the first annual FES STEM Night on January 25th. Robotics members shared information with guests about their season, their robot, and their project. Thank you to FES for inviting the team to show the littlest tigers what robotics is all about!
The dodgeball exploratory finished and we had so much fun! The 8th grade winner was Janiyah Bennett. Aiden Doerr took the prize in 7th grade. Our 6th grade winner was Alex Young and last but not least Anson Huang claimed the prize for 5th grade. Hope to see everyone again next time! Great job everybody!
8th-Grade FMS Computer Science students are working on creating their own adventure games! Students worked with a partner to design an adventure map. Then students utilized loops, conditionals, lists, and more in the Python coding language to code their adventure games. This project has allowed students to apply programming skills and logical thinking while being creative.
Students in Mr. Brocious' class have been focusing on studying populations. They have been using demographic data sets to analyze and draw conclusions about life in those countries and have taken population data and turned it into population pyramids that they then compared/contrasted. Most recently, students interpreted population pyramids that they had to match up with global news headlines based on the data presented.
Mrs McCall's 5th grade Tiger Time class participated in the annual door decorating contest sponsored by Student Council. This year's theme was "Rockin Around the Chemistree" and was created by her students.
Junior and Senior Student Council @FMS participated in Stockings for Soldiers sponsored by Burton Funeral Home. Students went shopping for the gifts and then stuffed the stockings to be given to the residents of the Soldiers and Sailors Home.
In Mrs. Potocki's 6th grade math class, students simulated the concept of "tag and release," which is used to analyze fish populations. Students marked 50 pieces of pasta, "released" the marked noodles back into their bag of unmarked pasta, and collected samples. Then they used their understanding of equivalent ratios to calculate how many total "fish" were in their "sea" of pasta.
This week in Ms. Pagel's math classes students are learning about parallel and perpendicular equations on the coordinate plane. Students have talked about how to create these equations, and students have been on the hunt for real life examples of parallel and perpendicular lines all over the school and in their everyday lives.
At Monday's board meeting, members of the Fairview Middle School R.O.A.R Service Club gave a presentation on club activities and provided information the R.O.A.R (Respect, Ownership, Achievement, Resilience) Program at FMS.
During their Percents Unit, 7th graders in Miss Stankiewicz's class used the Cakery Cafe Menu to practice calculating tax, tip, and discounts.

Students in Mr. Gebauer's 6th grade Social Studies class had the opportunity to virtually meet with PA State Senator Dan Laughlin on November 15th. They have been learning about the legislative branch of government and were very grateful for the opportunity. Topics and questions ranged from campaigns to filibusters to a typical day in the life of a Senator.
